The Japan Footstool, characterized by Finn Juhl's design principles, features an organically shaped frame. The frame's curvature creates a sense of airy space between the seat and the frame. Finn Juhl designed footrests for a few of his iconic furniture pieces, including the Japan Series.
The Japan Footstool is defined by its elegant frame which is visible from every angle and matches the Japan Sofa and Chair from the same series. The sublime simplicity of the footstool is a far cry from his earlier furniture designs and is inspired by traditional Japanese building techniques. The curvy shape radiates serene simplicity and is a reference to a traditional Japanese temple door. That was very typical of Finn Juhl, who famously said that deviation is in the detail.
Finn Juhl's partnership with the furniture manufacturer France & Son gave birth to a series of furniture well-suited for industrial production, while staying true to the ideals of simple designs that reigned in the 1950s. The most famous example of this cooperation is probably the Japan Series, which consists of a lounge chair, a footstool, a two seater sofa and a three seater sofa.
