"Form is not the aim of our work. It is the result." -Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Van der Rohe's approach to architecture and design was based on the philosophy of "no trivial decoration." The MR table, which incorporates tubular and rectangular steel, reflects this pure and simple design concept-at once functional and formal, the piece displays an awareness of proportion, detailing and craftsmanship, and a richness and integrity of materials.
After working in his father's stonemasonry business and engaging furniture apprenticeships, Mies established his own office in Berlin, and later became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and Director of the Bauhaus. He immigrated to the United States in 1938, setting up a practice in Chicago where he pursued his architecture career and later became the director of architecture at the Institute of Technology in Chicago.
The MR table features .5" thick clear polished plate glass. The frame and legs are tubular and rectangular stainless steel welded together with a seamless construction and either matte powder-coated or buffed to a mirror finish. Each piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohe signature.
