Designed in 1957 for an initiative exploring new uses for aluminum, the Noguchi Prismatic Table spent nearly fifty years as a prototype before Vitra brought it to production in 2002 in collaboration with the Noguchi Foundation. The current edition, reintroduced in 2023, honors Noguchi's original tri-color vision with three versions, each composed of three folded aluminum elements in graduating shades of grey.
The design is pure Noguchi: geometric yet organic, functional yet unmistakably sculptural. Inspired by Japanese paper folding, three independent powder-coated aluminum pieces join to form a three-legged table with a hexagonal top. Place one alone as a striking accent, or arrange several together to reveal the kaleidoscopic, tessellated patterns Noguchi originally envisioned.
Isamu Noguchi’s creativity was defined by his refusal to categorize his art, famously declaring "I am not a designer" while seamlessly blending sculpture, industrial furniture, and landscape architecture into a singular spatial practice. As a Japanese-American artist, his cross-cultural identity allowed him to bridge Western modern abstraction with traditional Eastern craftsmanship, fundamentally shaping the landscape of mid-century modern design
