Finn Juhl's fascination for surrealism is clearly visible in the Pelican Chair. Among all his designs, the Pelican Chair was perhaps the furthest ahead of its time. During the colder months, the characteristic Pelican Chair is available with upholstery in sheepskin from the Swedish island of Gotland. The upholstery adds an individual and unique expression as the natural warmth of the sheepskin emphasizes the organic shape of the sculptural Pelican Chair. The supply of sheepskin from Gotland is seasonal and therefore the quantity for sale is limited.

When the Pelican Chair was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1940, it stood out with its unusual animalistic shape and sturdy legs. Finn Juhl normally named his furniture simply after the year in which they were designed, but over time the nickname "The Pelican" stuck to the chair. Even though the Pelican Chair became instantaneously famous, 61 years would pass before it was put into production in 2001. The characteristic soft and organic shape is almost like a body holding a body. When you sit down, the chair practically gives you a friendly hug. Like many of Finn Juhl's later designs, the chair offers several comfortable ways to sit.

The island of Gotland is located in the Baltic Sea, 200 kilometres from Stockholm. With its large pine forests and beautiful coastlines, the island offers unique nature. The island is home to the Gotland Pelt Sheep, a highly active and social breed which has adapted to the harsh Scandinavian climate. Besides being both hardy and robust, the Gotland Sheep are particularly known for one thing - their significant grayish and curly coat. From dense, almost frizzy, to large shiny soft curls. Each individual sheep is unique, and no two hides are alike. By nature, the color of the the coat can vary from light grey to dark gray with shades of both white and black. The hides are all natural and thus no color is added in the process. When the Pelican is upholstered in sheepskin from Gotland, the expression of the upholstery is therefore entirely defined by nature. This means that each and every Pelican Chair will have an original and individual expression that emphasizes the characteristic and animalistic nature of the chair. Therefore, it is not possible to order a Gotland Pelican in a specific color as all chairs vary and meld in different ways, which is a part of the character and natural beauty of the sheepskin.
